The Dunajec is the largest and one of the most beautiful fly rivers in southern Poland. Particularly noteworthy is the several-kilometer stretch of this river from the mouth of Krośnica to the mouth of Ochotnica. The Dunajec flows there through a narrow valley surrounded by mountains covered with mixed forest. It has its own unique charm. Especially in autumn, when the slopes of the Gorce Mountains shimmer with all shades of green, red and yellow. The nature of the river in this section is very diverse. There are natural rocky thresholds, gusty rapids, rapid and over one and a half meters deep gutters framed with boulders, several meters deep, vast pits with a calm current called here “bania”, and rocky plains of various depths. We can count on fish everywhere.
Most often, fly fishermen catch trout and grayling here, which are plentiful in this section. Intensive and regular restocking with these species has been going on for a long time. However, they have intensified especially since 2008, when a special section operating according to the “catch and release” principle was created here. The trout caught here are usually 30 to 45 cm long. However, specimens over 60 cm long are not uncommon. The local molluscs grow very quickly and are in excellent condition, because the river is home to a rich and diverse population of insects. Older specimens also fall prey to minnows and dace, which are numerous here. All fly tying methods can be used with good results throughout the season. Streamers, nymphs and wet flies are generally the most effective. But also a dry bow tie can be irreplaceable. Especially during mass flights of mayflies and caddisflies. Graylings come from year to year. We can already meet a “cardinal” with a length of over 45 cm. The most effective fishing method is nymph during the day and dry fly in the evening. Of course, we select the flies and the method in the first place according to the conditions prevailing on the fishery.
The queens of deep pits and vast, calm planes are the mighty Danube salmon. They usually eat barbel, chub, dace, and bleak occurring sporadically in the quietest places. The legendary “headhead” is the most valuable fly fishing catch. With a bit of luck, you can find it by combing deep pits and flats. It is best to use a heavy fly rig and give her large nymphs or large huchen streamers. It also happens that the huchen will surprise us and in the deep current will nibble a nymph intended for trout or grayling. Then you have to show the highest craftsmanship of the hall, and anyway, most of the time, all you have to do is spread your arms wide. Anyway, in such a large and swift river, reeling each fastened fish is a lot of fun. Due to the size and depth of the Dunajec, it is advisable to use high waders with non-slip soles. The Dunajec is a great river for anyone who would like to face overgrown trout or grayling, and maybe even hunt with a fly for Danube salmon. Here you can catch your fill and meet many beautiful specimens. We invite you.
